Math Relay
Introduction
Math Relay will be a new competition that will replace Leap Frog starting this year. Teams will work together in groups of four to answer a set number of questions. Each student will receive their own questions to answer, but will also be allowed to correct any mistakes that any preceding student has made.
Rules and Guidelines
No talking is allowed during the entire competition, except between rounds.
Each team will consist of four students. Each student will be labeled as either A, B, C, or D, in that order, with each student receiving their own set of three questions. (Note: Order must be decided by the team before competition begins and can be changed once during the competition, and that is after the second round.) Questions are not multiple choice.
The competition will be divided up 3 rounds.
During each round:
- Student A will be given 2 minutes to answer a set of 3 questions. After the 2 minutes are up, Student A’s answers will be graded, and the number of correct answers sequentially on the test will be written on a board and the team will receive a tally for each correct answer. This means that if the answer to Question 2 is wrong, but the answer to Question 3 is correct, no points will be received for either question.
- Student B will then have 3 minutes and receive 3 new questions in addition to the questions that student A missed, and needs to start on the first question that Student A missed. Remember, student B will only know only many questions were answered correctly in a sequence, so will only be informed of the first wrong answer. It is his or her job to decide if any other questions were answered wrong by student A. All answers are graded sequentially again, for two points each.
- Student C will then follow the same procedures that student B followed but will have 4 minutes to work and will have 3 new questions.
- This process will continue until student D receives the final 3 questions and will have 5 minutes to work. For the final score, two points will be rewarded to any questions answered correctly in succession with the first question. Any correct answers that are not in the sequence with the first question will receive one point.
- The final score will be calculated at the end of each round but not posted. Each question correct in a sequence with the first question will be rewarded 2 points each, any other questions answered correctly will only be rewarded one point.
Here is a sample answer sheet that will be used during Math Relay. As you can see, students will be able to write down the answers for their respective sections. During the test, proctors will circle the correct answers from each section. Students in the subsequent sections will not need to rewrite any of the correct answers from previous sections, and are only required to answer any questions that were missed and the new questions they receive. Important note: students must write down the answers for all questions that were not circled in the previous section. Even if they believe that their teammate got the answer correctly in the previous section, they must copy it over to their section of the answer sheet to be counted. As stated in the rules, correct answers in sequence with the first will be on the board, so students will know which question to start at during the competition.
