Brief Description of the Contests
Math Bowl: Each participant will be given a written test on his/her math skills (including Algebra and Geometry). The winner is the student with the highest score.
Limit: 5 participants per school
Mad Hatter 7: Questions will be placed on the screen by an overhead projector. The amount of time spend on a question will be determine by participants. Speed and accuracy are the basis of this test. This test is only for seventh graders.
Limit 5 participants per school
Mad Hatter 8: This contest is the same as Mad Hatter 7 except that this test is only for eighth graders.
Limit 5 participants per school
Chalk Talk: Each participants is to give a speech to a panel of judges on a given topics pertaining to math. Hands-on materials are allowed (transparencies, etc). There is an overhead in the room. The topic will be announced at least two weeks ahead of time so the participant can prepare his/her speech.
Limit: 3 per school. Time Limit: 3 to 3 ½ minutes.
Terminology: This contest evaluates the participant’s knowledge of mathematical and algebraic terms.

Roadrunner: This contest tests the speed of the participant in the use of calculator. Students must supply their own calculators. Only basic function calculators are allowed. (No scientific functions are allowed; however, it is to your advantage to have a calculator with the square root and memory functions.)
Limit: 5 participants per school
Sudoku Quest: Sudoku is a game where there are nine 3 x 3 boxes, arranged into one giant square. In each row, column, and 3 x 3 grid, it has to be filled out so that the numbers from 1-9 all have to be in there, but never repeated. Some numbers are given out, but very few. This contest tests speed and logical thinking of the participant.
Limit: 3 participants per school
Math Relay: Math Relay will be a new competition that will replace Leap Frog starting this year. Teams will work together in groups of four to answer a set number of questions. Each student will receive their own questions to answer, but will also be allowed to correct any mistakes that any preceding student has made.
Limit: 3 teams of 4 participants per school
Final Round: The Top three from Math Bowl and Mad Hatter 8 will be competing in the Final Round in the auditorium before the award ceremony.
